Best Practices: An Integrative Approach to Optimizing Maternal Well-Being
Maternal mental health impacts not only the mother but also her baby and family. Perinatal mood disorders are often underdiagnosed and under recognized. Up to 20% of women suffer from postpartum depression, yet, health care provider knowledge is limited on how to address this serious condition. The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to an increasingly challenging postpartum period for mothers. Health care providers are in an optimal position to screen, evaluate, refer, and treat maternal mental health issues. An integrative treatment approach, ranging from various evidence based modalities, has been instrumental in optimizing maternal mental health.
As a result of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
- Describe the symptoms of postpartum depression and differentiate between postpartum anxiety and postpartum psychosis
- Describe 2 evidence based interventions for postpartum depression
- Describe how to screen for postpartum depression
